Sec 3E EL Straits Times Blogging WEEK 4

Instructions: Complete all the reflection questions

Refer to the “in” Section

1) Pg 4: Her world’s a stage

Reflection Questions:

Do you consider yourself an artistic person?

I do not really consider myself as an artistic person as I do not really love drawing or painting, and i do not really appreciate art.

What are your opinions of the theatre scene in Singapore?

I felt that the theatre scene in Singapore is quite advanced. There are opportunities for anyone that is interested in doing that.

2) Pg 10: Drink-and-Eat MRT Riders on the rise

Reflection Question:

How do you feel about MRT commuters eating and drinking blatantly on the train?

I felt that those MRT commuters eating and drinking blatantly are rather uncivilized. As some food such as durian give out strong odors, when they are going to eat, other commuters might not like the odors. As for those MRT commuters, I felt that they will just litter the place making it look dirty. Unless they avoid making the place dirty, that is still under acceptable. For example keeping sweet wrapper after eating and avoid spilling water on it.drinking blatantly on the train?

Term 2 Week 5 (20th April)

Article: “I was an addict” – ‘Straits Times IN’ Section (In The Air Pg 2)

1a) What are some of the earliest signs mentioned in the article to indicate that a person is addicted to gaming?

When one is addicted to gaming, several early signs would be skipping meals, lose sleep just to play which will lead to sleeping in class. Eventually, he would be tempted to skip school too.

He would introduce himself using his avatar name in real life. He becomes obsessed with having to have the latest gadgets in games, and saving money to buy these gadgets.Besides that, an addict would also think about the game all the time. He would constantly make conversation about the game, and might even begin to imagine playing it when doing something else.

1b) State some of the methods listed by the author to overcome the addiction to gaming.

One of the method would be asking parents to lock the computer in order to prevent the people from playing. But the most important point is to avoid the game, which is control themselves from gaming.

2) What are some of your reactions after reading this article? If a close friend of yours confesses to you that he/she is addicted to online games, what would your advice to him/her be?

I am not really surprised upon reading this article. As most of the student somehow is playing games such as maplestory, audition and many more. As i used to get addicted to some games such as maplestory.

I would advise he to quit it, frankly speaking it is very hard to quit. So it will be good to uninstall the game is they are under early stage of addicted to game. But if he is beyond the early stage i would advise him to lock the computer. Use the computer necessary and may ask him out to study instead of he studying alone in front of computer.

Term 2 Week 4 (13th April)

Article: “Mum’s catching up with me … on Facebook”– ‘Home’ Section (Pg B2)

1) What were the reasons given by Facebook parent, Rashida Husian, when she requests access to the networking sites and also to what her children had put online?

She can keep track of her children and their friend and the main reason would be to keep in touch with them in addition she leaves them words of encouragement when she feels they need some.

2) Do you think it is a good idea to accept requests by your parents to add them readily to your friends’ list on the Facebook? Why?

Yes, i think it will be good if my parents add me in Facebook, somehow they will know what is happening and sometimes they will also know my feeling of something that happen because sometimes we do not have the time to communicate with our parent by chatting

Term 2 Week 3 (9th April)

Article: “HFMD cases near epidemic level”– ‘Home’ Section (Pg B3)

1) How does HFMD spread and what are some of the preventive measures that the childcare centres and kindergartens have taken to ensure that the disease is contain?

Affecting mainly children aged 10 years and younger, it is spread through bodily fluids, which is why it can be passed quickly among young children who share toys that they may have put into their mouths.

Childcare Centres and Kindergartens are taking precautions to avoid spreading the virus by spending more money clean the premises after each session to avoid outbreaks. Besides that, children are now trained to wash up and clean their hands and mouths before classes and meals.Childcare centres and Kindergartens have been ordered to close, as the cases are spread out rather than clustered in any one particular area.

Children who are suspected to have contracted to have the diseases are immediately sent home and their parents are asked to send them to the doctors immediately.

2) In your opinion, what implications will the childcare centres face if the HFMD issue escalates further?

In my opinion, i think that it will cause troubles several effects such as closing it down and clean the whole place. Or there will be people going to the place to check their cleanness.

Straits Times E-Forum Reflection

Term 2 Week 2 (30th March)

Article: “Sorry guys, these lots are not for you” – ‘Home’ Section (Pg B1)

Question 1:
What were some of the reasons cited in the article why there was a need to have parking lots for women only in these buildings?

One of the reasons is to help women with young children to load and unload bulky prams more easily. Another reason would be that it will be less tiring for woman especially when they wear heels.

Question 2:
(a)In your opinion, do you think it is necessary to allocate parking lots for women only? Why?

I think it is not necessary to allocate parking lots for women only as it will seem to be biased to women. Somehow it might also affect others that think Singapore and sometimes during peak hours people might not find lots to park so it will be easier when parking lots are just for one gentle.

(b)Which group of people do you then feel should be allocated such priority parking? Explain.

In my opinion, I think that it is good to allocate parking lots for the pregnant lady, those that has elderly and those parents that has children which is below 10 years old. It will seem to be easier to alight especially those elderly who are weak. This will help them to walk a lesser distance .

Week 5

Article: “NTU Death Fall” – ‘HOME’ Section (Pg B6)

Question 1:
What were some indications which showed that the victim was facing problems before he committed the rash act?

Firstly, he starts playing computer games ( World of Warcraft ) up to 6 hours per day. He also did not really care about his Final-Year-Project (FYP) which deadline of the FYP is March 10. Secondly, he rarely goes out of his hostel room and lastly he suddenly cut off all communication with his friends.

Question 2:
Is it very stressful being a student in Singapore? Explain.
What are some problems you face as a student which adds to your stress level?

Yup, it is very stressful being a student in Singapore. As we face to a lot difficulties such as high expectation from parent, friends and even teacher.

Nowadays, it is common to find student handling with more than 7 subjects, co-curriculum activities (CCA) ,homework, tuition, revision, and sometimes school stuff. These are the majority that leads Singapore student to the stress level. If the student didn't meet his/her target for some subject, they will be disheartened and wanting to do hard for the next test. They will stress themselves with revision tuition and this also make them stress.

Parent on the other hand might be another main reason that leads student to stressful life. As they may do well in term 1 but not as good as term 2. As parent, they would expect their child to improve, if we didn't do as well as expect they will somehow nag at us blame us for not doing well.
